If you’re feeling insecure about your lips being on the thinner side, let us reassure you – you’re not alone. Trends nowadays all revolve around plump, juicy lips that you really have to win the genetic lottery to have naturally.

There are so many ways you can achieve that same look even if you were born with really small lips. Still, not all of those ways are equal – some just yield better results than others.

We’re here to talk about – or, better yet – warn you against using the hyaluronic acid pen for lips, a treatment that is as popular as it is dangerous.

So, what makes hyaluron pen lip filler so problematic? And what can you do instead?

Stick around and we’ll tell you all about it!

What Is Hyaluron Pen Lip Filler?

A newer treatment for plumping up the lips that involves the use of a hyaluronic acid pen – a tool that gives a burst of hyaluronic acid to the targeted spot under very high pressure.

It’s sometimes also called a needleless lip injection and is often advertised as something you can do at home.

Hyaluron, also known as hyaluronic acid, is a natural substance that is found in the body.

It acts as a lubricant that keeps different body parts moving smoothly – for example, it is present in the joints and allows them to bend without causing any pain.

In cosmetics, hyaluronic acid has a wide range of uses since it’s a very powerful moisturizer. This means that it’s commonly used in skincare and hair care products and has lots of benefits in that regard.

Similarly, hyaluronic acid is also frequently injected into certain parts of the skin to plump them and provide more volume. This works on different parts of the face – from creating bigger lips to evening out wrinkles.

And don’t get us wrong – hyaluronic lip fillers can be great, when injected with a needle, with precision.

But despite the promise of a cheaper and less invasive alternative to injections, the lip filler pen absolutely deserves all the criticism it’s been getting lately, but we’ll talk about that in a moment.

How Does Laser Lip Plumping Work?

It’s all about boosting collagen production in the lip tissue.

As we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen and our elastin fibers get weaker. This causes our skin to lose its firmness. The change displays as loose skin in the lips, neck, around the eyes, etc.

Laser lip enhancement works by exposing the lips tissue to short pulses of heat from a laser beam. This stimulates the production of new collagen, improving the texture and elasticity of the lips.

In most cases, the laser is applied to the outer lips and a bit of the surrounding skin. If deeper stimulation is necessary, it can also be applied to the inside of the lips.

The skin surrounding the lips is tightened, which gives more volume to the lips themselves. You don’t lose your natural lip shape, they just look plumper and younger.

Hyaluron Pen for Marionette Lines

Like we said, hyaluronic acid is used for all sorts of cosmetic embellishments. So, when the pen appeared as an alternative to the injection, people wanted to try it out on different facial areas.

Most of these experiments didn’t stick, but one use you can still come across is using the hyaluron pen for marionette lines.

Nasolabial lines, more vividly described as marionette lines, connect the corners of the lips and the nostrils. They appear as a result of aging and are often seen as an insecurity that needs to be fixed, despite being completely natural.

Since they’re so common (and commonly disliked) that a wide range of treatment options quickly became available – the hyaluron pen included.

In this case, the treatment can help the issue, although the effects of Hyaluron will fade in 6-12 months, after which you’ll need to repeat the process.

The main problem here is that repeated treatments can make your marionette lines worse. If that happens, traditional cosmetic surgery will most likely be your only option to get rid of them once and for all.

Is the Hyaluron Pen Safe?

We’ll keep it short – no.

The first reason we say this is because there is zero control over how deep the hyaluronic lip filler pen penetrates the skin.

When working with injections, the professional can estimate how deep it goes based on the patient’s skin thickness and desired results. With the pen, however, the hyaluron sometimes can’t go deep enough, which can cause a slew of issues.

Similarly, the filler placement is very hard to control. This usually results in what we call a ‘filler mustache’, but there are other, more serious concerns that can arise as well.

The fact that the treatment is often self-administered is a benefit to some since it’s cheaper and requires less effort than injections.

But this also means that the average user won’t know how to use it and therefore have even less control, plus won’t have the means to check if the pen and the substance in it are sanitary.

In fact, you’ll most likely not even know whether what you got is even hyaluronic filler or not.

Is the Hyaluron Pen FDA Approved?

No. In fact, the FDA even issued a warning against the hyaluron pen.

Their concerns have to do with what we talked about in the previous section, focusing on the fact that they could be dangerous due to being contaminated. The warning also talks about possible serious and potentially permanent damage that this tool can do.

The FDA’s statement goes out to both users and professionals, so keep in mind that salons that are offering this service probably don’t have their clients’ best interests in mind.

Hyaluron Pen Dangers & Risks

Here are a couple of reasons to steer clear of the hyaluron pen treatment:

Chance of Allergic Reaction

Here are a couple of reasons to steer clear of the hyaluron pen treatment:

When it comes to the different hyaluron pen risks, we have to mention the possibility of an allergic reaction.

Although this is a danger with any cosmetic treatment, in this case, it is amplified because, like we said, the devices are somewhat shady and there’s no guarantee that substance inside the filler pen is the safest.

Chance of Extreme Swelling & Bruising

Similar to other hyaluronic treatments that include injections, Hyaluron pen side effects include some swelling. However, when a pen is used, this swelling can be much more extreme and last for longer. The same is true for bruising.

Chance of Infection

The worst of the worst are the various infections that can arise from using unchecked tools and substances.

The main manufacturers of hyaluron pens are usually located in countries whose laws and regulations are much more lax than those in the US, so there may be more contaminants present than with other, FDA-approved methods.

Tissue Damage

Other risks include temporary or permanent scarring, which may even require surgery or laser treatments to get rid of.

Hyaluron Pen Lip Filler Price

Even after reading all about the dangers we (and the FDA) just talked about, we hope you’re not still considering getting this treatment.

What we can tell you is that a professional hyaluron pen lip filler is charged according to the amount of filler you get. 1 ml goes for anywhere from $100 to $500.

Generally, cheaper than injections, but not worth it.

If you’re thinking about DIY-ing it – which we strongly advise you not to do – the average price of a pen is just around $60. Red flag, right?

Hyaluron Pen Filler Alternatives

On the other hand, if we’ve managed to sway you away from the Hyaluron pen treatment, we’re going to talk about some much safer alternatives!

All these methods are designed to give you fuller lips but don’t come with as many warnings and dangers – although caution is always advised.

Hyaluron Injections

As we said, fillers are great when injected with a needle by a skilled professional. Filler injections can give you a perfect, customized plump, adjusting the shape of your lips and giving them extra volume.

The downside is that a needle is involved, it’s not cheap, and the results last for about a year, since hyaluronic fillers are naturally absorbed by the body.

Laser Lip Plumping

The treatment involves a laser that beams light energy at your lips, which then triggers its natural response, which is to boost the production of collagen.

The entire thing lasts up to 15-20 minutes, but the results are stunning! You can expect to see fuller and more defined lips, as well as an improvement in the symmetry and the color.

This method is probably the least uncomfortable since it requires absolutely no downtime and is completely non-invasive.

So, if you’re looking for something simple, yet effective – this is definitely worth looking into!

Here’s all you need to know about laser lip plumping.

Lip Lift

The lip lift is actually a form of cosmetic surgery, so it’s more invasive and the recovery period takes a little longer, but it’s also permanent, so you won’t have to worry about touch-ups and corrections.

The cosmetic surgeon will make an incision between the nose and the upper lift, and tug at the lip upwards. This makes the lips fuller, but doesn’t require any substances to be introduced – it’s still your natural lip, just a little stretched out.

Lip Blush

This one won’t give you actual 3D volume, but it will give you an illusion of subtle plumping, plus a stunning lip color that doesn’t run or smudge for years!

Lip blush is a form of permanent makeup – a cosmetic tattoo. Cosmetic pigments are deposited into the skin of the lips with a machine that is similar to a tattoo gun.

You can go with a darker, vibrant shade, so you look like you’re always wearing lipstick. But you can also choose a pigment that is similar to your natural lip color but better, so you get a subtle enhancement.

Lip blush lasts around 2 years or longer, depending on how you take care of it. This means that it actually lasts longer than filler, which will become unnoticeable after around 6 months to 1 year.

These 2 can also be combined, as long as you space them out a bit.

Coloring in the lips will make them look fuller, but the great thing with lip blush is that the pink part of the lips can be slightly extended outwards, depending on your lip anatomy.

Hyaluron Pen Lip Filler – Main Takeaways

To sum things up, we have to remind you that the Hyaluron pen lip filler pen is definitely not a good option.

Both the tool and the substance in it are potentially contaminated and unchecked, so there are a lot of risks – from some bruising to permanent damage and dangerous infections.

Instead, we’d advise you to look into alternative lip plumping methods. There are a lot of them available ranging from non-invasive 20-minute laser treatments to cosmetic surgery that is still safer than the Hyaluron pen.

Either way, thin lips are an insecurity for many, and there are many options to fix that insecurity. So, please, take some more time to do research and find an alternative that will work best for you and still keep you safe!
